Why Support Red Cross Giving Day ~ #Help1Family

In 1979, the beautiful island I grew up on, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, experienced a severe volcanic eruption. It’s been said that children don’t remember much of what happens when they’re young unless it was traumatic experience. That for me was indeed a traumatic experience. I was 3 years old at the time and can still vividly see in the back of my mind the volcanic ash falling down around me.

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of American Red Cross. All opinions are 100% mine.

Although my family was fortunate enough to not lose anything, many lives and homes were lost. Since then there has been other natural disasters including tropical storms and hurricanes which has led to severe flooding with livestock, human lives and homes being lost as well over the years. However, whenever there’s a disaster on my island, the Red Cross has always been there to lend a helping hand.

Many may not know this, but I was a part of the Red Cross chapter in my own country as a child, and while I’ve never had to call on the Red Cross for help during a disaster, I have also had my own personal experiences with them. When my father was terminally diagnosed six years ago, they were instrumental in getting through to me while I was in the army so that I could visit before he passed away. That’s why whenever there’s a chance for me to help out the Red Cross financially, I do so. When Oklahoma was ravaged by tornadoes I donated by simply sending a text, same with Hurricane Harvey.

March 28th is Giving Day and the American Red Cross’ 24 hour fundraising event that is focused on driving financial donations to support disaster relief work.

Did you know that nearly every eight minutes, the American Red Cross meets a family that has lost everything to a home fire or other disaster—the roof over their heads, their clothes, their most cherished possessions? Disasters can happen at any time and it can happen to you. You’re not immune.

But you can help during those first devastating hours!

On March 28,  you can unite with thousands of people just like on American Red Cross Giving Day to make a difference. If we each #Help1Family, just think of what we can do.

A single donation of just $88.50 can provide a family with a day’s worth of food, blankets and other essentials that a family needs after a disaster and it’s all tax deductible.

However, you don’t have to wait until Giving Day to help families in need, you can start donating today and your donation will appear in the total amount raised on the Red Cross’ website on Giving Day, March 28, 2018.

Here are three ways your donations can make an impact and why you should support the Red Cross Giving Day.

1. You will be making a big impact on someone’s life. Think about it? Your donation will be helping a family that is in urgent need. As mentioned above, your donation can provide a family with a day’s worth of food, plus blankets and other essentials.

2. Your gift can provide hope during those first devastating hours. When you donate on Giving Day, you not only make a difference, but you help the Red Cross help more families who have been impacted by a disaster.

3. With your charitable donation, you are there for millions of people who have been impacted by emergencies every year, and your donation can help them get back on their feet and rebuild their lives.
