Most of us have fond memories from the past that we hang onto. This could be a childhood birthday party, a vacation, or anything else. We often think back to these to reminisce, or to remember a person who is no longer in our lives.
Unfortunately, over time, memories will fade as our brain makes new memories and has other things to remember. This can be devastating, as there are some things we never want to forget. Thankfully, you aren’t doomed to forget everything, as there are some great ways you can keep memories alive. This article is going to go over a few of them.
Go Digital
While memories exist in our heads, many of us will bring them into the real world in some way to help them last longer and be able to remember them better. This can be through photos, videos, or even items that remind us of certain people, places, or things.
Unfortunately, these things aren’t always very durable and may not last as long as you’d like. For example, old home movies shot on film can last years if treated well, but will eventually become damaged, distorted, and faded over time. Thankfully, it is possible to digitize home movie films and prevent yourself from ever losing those memories.
By keeping photos and videos online, you can be sure they won’t deteriorate and will continue to look great. Just be careful not to delete them on your computer or mobile phone.
Keep a Journal
Writing in a journal is another awesome way to keep memories alive. By writing in one every day or week, you can be sure that all of your thoughts, experiences, and memories are captured and can be read years and years in the future.
In addition to keeping track of memories and ensuring they are always fresh in your mind, journaling has other benefits, as well. It is great for reducing stress, coping with problems, managing anxiety, and even planning and prioritizing your life.
While some people will prefer to write on pen and paper, you can also keep a digital journal on your computer or in an app on your phone. Wherever you keep your journal, be sure it is a safe place and one that isn’t likely to damage it.
Create a Memory Box and/or Time Capsule
A common way to preserve memories is by creating a time capsule or memory box. You can fill these with a variety of notes, pictures, trinkets, and other items that trigger specific memories for you. Then, you will close the box up and not open it for a number of years. Once you eventually do, you will instantly be reminded of the past and it can bring back cherished memories that were almost gone.
You can set any schedule you want when it comes to when you open it. Some may do it after a couple of years, while others may be able to wait a decade or longer. The choice is yours.
Of course, be sure to keep the box in a safe place, and do your best to resist the temptation to open it early. This one is especially great as it can often bring back old memories that you completely forgot about. Sometimes, all it takes is one childhood toy, one school assignment, or one photo to bring a ton of memories rushing back.
Any of these three methods can be a great way to keep old and precious memories alive and prevent them from fading. You want to do all you can to preserve your memories, as you never know when you may forget about something.
