How can you enjoy Thanksgiving alone? It’s not as difficult as you think.
This is not my first rodeo, and I’ve actually enjoyed Thanksgiving alone in the past. As a soldier in the US Army, we’re not always granted leave to spend and enjoy the holidays with our families. This is not something that is guaranteed to us, so there have been holidays spent all by myself. However, that doesn’t mean that you don’t yearn for the love and togetherness of family.
Thanksgiving is one such holiday when you think about all the food and laughter that usually go along with it. This year, I will once again be spending Thanksgiving alone and wanted to share a few ways that you can enjoy your Thanksgiving when you’re alone. Remember that being alone doesn’t have to mean being lonely.
Here are 10 ways to make the most of your holiday solo.
1. Think of All That You’re Thankful For
First and foremost, you can take the time to really focus on what you’re thankful for. This is something we often forget to do in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. When you sit down to your Thanksgiving meal, take a moment to think about all the things in your life that you’re thankful for, and if you’re in need of ideas, here are 20 things to be thankful for.
- Our health
- Our families
- Our friends
- Our homes
- Our jobs
- Our freedom
- Our education
- Our pets
- Our favorite foods
- The ability to give back to our communities
- The natural beauty of our world
- Music, art, and other forms of creativity
- The laughter of children
- The love of our partners
- The support of our families and friends during difficult times
- The kindness of strangers
- Good books to read
- A warm bed to sleep in
- A roof over our heads
- And so much more…
2. Cook Yourself A Meal
Another great way to enjoy Thanksgiving alone is by cooking yourself an amazing meal. This is the perfect opportunity to try out that new recipe you’ve been dying to make. You can also take the time to really savor each and every bite without having to worry about making conversation or small talk.
3. Get Outside and Enjoy Nature
If you’re feeling a little cooped up, get outside and enjoy nature. Take a long walk, go for a hike, or just sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. Getting some exercise will also help to relieve any stress or anxiety you may be feeling.
4. Volunteer Your Time
One of the best ways to enjoy Thanksgiving alone is by giving back to those less fortunate. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer your time at local soup kitchens or food pantries. Not only will you be helping others, but you’ll also be surrounded by people who are grateful for what they have.
5. Have a Movie Marathon
Self-care is important but even more so during the holidays when you’re alone reminiscing about past Thanksgivings. One of the best ways to relax is by having a movie marathon. Curl up with your favorite blanket, make some popcorn, and watch all your favorite movies. You can even make it a themed marathon by watching only Thanksgiving-related movies or ones that take place during the holiday season.
6. Get Ahead on Your Holiday Shopping
If you’re not one for sitting around and doing nothing, use your solo Thanksgiving as an opportunity to get ahead on your holiday shopping. This is the perfect time to score some great deals and avoid the crowds at the mall. Plus, you’ll be one step closer to being done with your holiday shopping!
7. Take a Day Trip
If you’re feeling adventurous, take a day trip somewhere new. Explore a nearby town or city that you’ve always wanted to visit. This is also a great opportunity to take some time for yourself and do some much-needed soul-searching.
8. Read a Good Book
If you’re looking for a relaxing way to spend Thanksgiving alone, curl up with a good book. Whether you’re reading your favorite novel or exploring a new one, there’s nothing quite like getting lost in a good book.
9. Spend Time With Your Pets
For many of us, our pets are like family. If you’re spending Thanksgiving alone, take the time to cuddle up with your furry (or not-so-furry) friend. They’ll be more than happy to keep you company, and you might even learn a thing or two from them!
10. Connect With Loved Ones
Just because you’re not with your loved ones in person, doesn’t mean that you can’t connect with them. Give them a call, send them a text, or even better – video chat with them! This is the perfect way to feel like you’re spending Thanksgiving together, even when you’re miles apart.
In Conclusion
No matter how you choose to spend your Thanksgiving alone, remember that it’s important to focus on the positive. This is a time to be grateful for all that you have, even if it doesn’t seem like much. Take the time to enjoy your own company and make the most of your holiday! Most importantly, be grateful and thankful for what you have!
