Did you know there’s virtually something to celebrate every day of the year? There’s almost guaranteed to be some kind of holiday happening – whether it’s popular, symbolic, or just plain strange. With May coming up, I thought it would be fun to highlight a few of the silly, fun, and unusual holidays you and your family can celebrate throughout the month.
Here are just a few of the best fun holidays happening in May:
May 1 – World Laughter Day
Start the month off by having a good laugh. Research has shown that laughter can have some great benefits for our health, so why not make it a priority? World Laughter Day is all about, well, laughter. Go out and enjoy some comedy, crack jokes with friends, or just let loose and have fun. Spend time with loved ones, watch a funny movie, or read a humorous book.
May 2 – World Tuna Day
May 2 is the day to celebrate tuna – one of seafood’s most beloved and versatile ingredients. Try something new in honor of this fun holiday, whether it’s making a delicious tuna dish or going out for sushi with friends.
May 3 – National Lumpy Rug Day
This fun holiday celebrates all those lumpy, bumpy rugs that are so difficult to vacuum. On National Lumpy Rug Day, take the time to appreciate all the “lumps” in your life – whether it’s a physical imperfection, a personality trait, or something else entirely. Embrace your individuality and be proud of who you are!
May 4 – Star Wars Day
Next up is a day dedicated to everyone’s favorite futuristic franchise. Rewatch your favorite Star Wars movies from the series, whip up a Star Wars-inspired recipe, talk like Yoda, or find another way to embrace your inner nerd and celebrate the series – if it’s one you love!
May 5 – Revenge of the Fifth
For all the Star Wars-haters out there, this is the day for you. Rather than celebrating the series, use Revenge of the Fifth as a day to get your own back on anyone who’s ever done you wrong – or just to do something fun and mischievous. Maybe put Saran Wrap over the toilet seat, move all the furniture in someone’s room around while they’re sleeping, or play a harmless prank on a friend or family member. Just don’t take things too far!
May 9 – Lost Sock Memorial Day
We all deal with it – the case of the missing sock. More often than not, a load of laundry turns up at least one sock without a match. Sometimes, it’s more. May 9 is a day to make one last attempt to look for those missing socks before moving on with your life. It’s a time to purge any single socks you’ve been holding onto, hoping to find the other. And, depending on what that looks like for you, it might be a time to order some new socks!
May 11 – Eat What You Want Day
Eat What You Want Day is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a day to let yourself and your loved ones indulge in your favorite treats, snacks, and meals without feeling guilty, worrying about the calories, or needing to justify your decisions. Enjoy it while it lasts!
May 18 – International Museum Day
There’s no better time to visit your favorite local museum – in person or virtually – than International Museum Day. If you’re in a position to do so, consider making a donation to support them, too, or signing up for a membership.
May 19 – Scooter Day
On May 19, celebrate one of the most fun (and sometimes controversial) modes of transportation: the scooter. Whether you have a Razor scooter from your childhood or a brand new electric scooter, take it for a spin and enjoy the wind in your hair. If you don’t have a scooter, maybe this is the day to buy one!
May 21 – International Tea Day
Did you know there’s a whole day dedicated to tea? In honor of International Tea Day, take some time to relax with your favorite cup of tea. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a new flavor or style of tea. There are so many different kinds out there, and it’s fun to experiment and find one you love.
May 23 – International Jazz Day
Bust out your record player – or your Spotify playlist and smart speaker – and turn up the jazz. Not sure where to start? This list is a great jumping-off point.
May 28 – National Hamburger Day
Unlike Eat What You Want Day, this is a day devoted to a single delicious sandwich we all know and love – the mighty hamburger. Check your local burger spots to see if they’re offering any deals if you don’t feel like grilling your own!
These are just a handful of the silly, fun, and unusual holidays you can celebrate in May!
