If you’re like me, you love a good family road trip. There’s something about packing up the car and hitting the open road that is incredibly liberating. But even more than the journey itself, I love spending time with my family while we’re on the road. And I know I’m not alone in this – plenty of families enjoy taking road trips together. So if you’re planning on taking a trip in the near future, be sure to pack some fun games to keep the kids entertained! In this post, I’ll share 10 of my favorite road trip games for kids. 1. I Spy
I spy is a road trip classic for a reason – it’s easy to play and can be enjoyed by kids of all ages. To play, one player (the “spy”) chooses an object within view and announces, “I spy with my little eye something that is . . .” The other players then take turns guessing what the object is. Once someone correctly guesses the object, that player becomes the next spy.

This game is perfect for kids who like to be active and explore their surroundings. Before setting out on your road trip, put together a list of items that can be found along the way (e.g., a yellow flower, a barn, a road sign). As you’re driving, help your child check off items on the list. The first person to spot all of the items wins!
3. road trip bingo
To play road trip bingo, each player gets a bingo card with different items that can be seen while driving (e.g., a truck, a cow, a police car). As you’re driving along, players mark off items on their cards when they see them. The first player to get five in a row – horizontally, vertically, or diagonally – wins!
4. 20 Questions
This game is perfect for kids who like to ask questions and figure out clues. To play, one player thinks of an object, person, or place and the other players take turns asking up to 20 yes-or-no questions to try to figure out what it is. For example, if the player is thinking of a dog, some possible questions might be: “Is it an animal?”, “Does it have four legs?”, and “Can it bark?” The first person to guess correctly becomes the next player.
5. would you rather?
Would You Rather is a great game for kids who like to debate and argue (which, let’s be honest, is most kids!). To play, one person poses a hypothetical question with two equally undesirable options, such as “Would you rather eat a bug or drink from a dirty puddle?” The other players then debate which option they would choose and why. This game can get pretty heated, but it’s all in good fun!
6. license plate game
This is a classic road trip game that can be enjoyed by the whole family. To play, each player looks for license plates from different states and tries to be the first to spot all 50. For an extra challenge, players can try to find plates from as many different countries as possible.

For this game, each player comes up with a word or phrase that will start off a story. The next player then continues the story by adding another word or phrase, and so on. This game is great for kids who like to use their imagination and make up stories.
8. road trip mad libs
Mad Libs is a classic road trip game that kids always enjoy. If you’re not familiar with the game, each player takes turns asking the other players for phrases of a certain type (e.g., noun, verb, adjective). These phrases are then used to fill in the blanks of a pre-written story, resulting in a hilarious – and often nonsensical – tale.
9. road trip charades
This is a classic road trip game that can be enjoyed by the whole family. One player thinks of a word or phrase and acts it out for the other players to guess. For example, if the word is “elephant,” the player might act out trumpeting and trunk-swinging motions. The first person to guess the word or phrase correctly becomes the next player.
10. road trip trivia
This game is perfect for kids who like to show off their knowledge. Before setting out on your road trip, come up with a list of trivia questions about the places you’ll be visiting (e.g., What is the capital of Pennsylvania?). As you’re driving, take turns asking each other the trivia questions. The person with the most correct answers at the end of the trip wins!
