Most Common RV Issues and How to Solve Them

Only those who own an RV know how wonderful it is to have this vehicle. It’s your joy and pride. Many perceive it as one of the best tools to travel the world, yet feel as if you are doing it from your home.

It’s no wonder since this travel trailer is precisely that, a mobile home, a place where you are the most comfortable. Still, just like with many other things, there is a negative side to it. Anyone who has traveled for more than a couple of days is aware of it.

What’s even worse is the fact expenses for these vehicles are nowhere near affordable. Still, you gotta do what you gotta do. What are the most common ones? To prepare you for potential disasters, we’ve rounded up a couple of them.

TIRE BLOWOUT

Tires are one of the most important parts of any RV, and they are the ones that carry all the weight. However, at times, this burden can be too much for them, especially when you are traveling on either bumpy or poorly maintained roads.

Namely, a tire blowout can frequently be pretty dangerous, due to their weight, as well as the size of your motorhome, however, do not despair. There are some things you can do to prevent this.

The only thing that must be done is to check the pressure as frequently as possible, especially before you start traveling. More importantly, you should always have an additional wheel whenever you are going somewhere.

Do not forget to check the pressure on this wheel too. If by any chance, you experience this issue, pull over your vehicle right away and replace a tire. This is a must if you want to stay safe on the road.

WATER ISSUES

There are a number of issues that can potentially arise when it comes to this. We are about to list the most common water problems in RVs to prepare you in advance. For instance, you may notice that water doesn’t heat up.

If that’s the case, usually, the only thing that you should do is to simply turn off a valve (known also as a bypass valve) at the water heater. Another thing you can do is to check the thermostat because it’s frequently the reason why you do not have any hot water or you are dealing with insufficient water heating.

If you notice that water has a tart odor, it may be due to the anode that is placed inside the heater. In that case, you must replace it. Just remove it to see whether it must be cleaned, or replaced.

Besides these common issues, there are a couple of more that you could potentially bump into. No matter what happens, it’s of great relevance to regularly perform water heater maintenance to prevent anything bad from occurring.

BATTERY FAILURE

All the fun and cheerful moments can quickly be ended if batteries for RV do not work properly. Therefore, you should always focus on the fluid levels, as bring at least a gallon of distilled water just in case something bad happens.

Besides, it wouldn’t hurt if you also wore eye and hand protection while you are dealing with this issue. This is a relatively common RV problem, therefore, it’s always smart to be prepared. Luckily, this is something that can easily be solved.

All you have to do is to plug a rig into an air conditioner power, so you can effortlessly charge your batteries. If you realize that they are not charging, then it’s time to replace the batteries with new ones.

THE TOILET

Having a classic home toilet isn’t the same as the one that’s inside your motor home. This one goes through A LOT. Just think how often it goes up and down, then left and right while you are driving.

So, what are the most common issues when it comes to this? You may experience having an inconsistent flow or the water not staying in, or some rubber seal and valve alternatives. What you can do is to first turn off the water pressure and then flush the toilet.

Once you do that, eliminate bolts from every side that strengthens the toilet to the floor and then lift the toilet from the wall. Find the part that needs to be replaced and purchase/order a new one.

As you can see, there are so many things that can go wrong and stop you from having the ride of your life. Luckily, all of them are solvable. Go carefully through them to see whether these tips can help you, if not, consult with a professional.
