With the deadly COVID-19 on everyone’s mind and hand-washing highly recommended, I’m sharing with you an easy way to make your own handmade foaming soap that’s inexpensive to make, so it won’t deplete your savings.
This couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. I recently received notice that one of my favorite brands was having a sale on hand soap. I was running low on my own stash that I had purchased at a recent sale, but by the time I got online to order, most of them were sold out. We have been going through hand soap like there’s no tomorrow, and it’s becoming very costly to have to replace them consistently, so I needed a more economical way. It also didn’t help that hand-sanitizers were now sold out in stores, and making your own hand sanitizer is almost impossible as well.
I already knew how to make my own bar soap and had all the other ingredients and supplies lying around, except for the distilled water, so this didn’t cost me much to make at all. Something to note about making your own soap is that it’s a lot more natural, as you know exactly what you’re putting in there. I just happened to take a look at what I was using before, and while they smelled amazing, I wasn’t sure what some of the ingredients were, which meant that I didn’t know if they were good for me or not. This takes all the guesswork out of the equation.
While there are two primary ingredients that are necessary to make your handsoap, there are a few others that are optional but would make it so much better. For example, if you want a bit of color, you can add soap color, which is much different from food color. You may add some vitamin E oil or even coconut oil to keep your hands moisturized, as soap can dry out your hands. No matter what you decide to do, this is an inexpensive way to always have an all-natural hand soap around.
Ingredients and Supplies
¾ Cup Distilled Water
¼ Cup Castille Soap (preferably unscented)
10 Drops Essential Oils (your favorite)
10 Drops Vitamin E, Almond, or Coconut Oil (optional for moisture)
Soap Colorant (optional)
Foaming Hand Soap Dispenser (I reused a few BBW dispensers that I had on hand)
Measuring Cup
Directions
(Now, if you have foaming dispensers that you’ve purchased in the past, you can simply reuse those dispensers. Merely rinse them out to get them clean. Remember to pump out any residue leftover in the pumps.)
Remove the top of your soap dispenser and pour about ½ cup of distilled water into your bottle. You’re going to want more water than Castille soap as a little Castille soap goes a very long way. For the Castille soap, I recommend using Dr. Bronner’s brand. You can find Castille soap in health food stores, Amazon, or even at Walmart, where I purchased mine. I got the citrus blend, but for those who want to add scented essential oils besides citrus, the unscented works best.
Add the ¼ cup of Castille soap, along with the 10 drops of essential oil. This is also the time when you’ll want to add your color or other moisturizing oil. If you’re adding the moisturizing oil, remember to shake the bottle before washing as the oil wouldn’t mix with the blend.
(I used an orange essential oil because I really wanted to smell the orange, but if you’re using the unscented Castille soap, you can use any essential oil you like, including food scented ones.)
Fill the bottle with more water until it reaches the top.
Replace the cover and shake the ingredients gently together to mix.
Now it’s time to squirt and wash your hands. Can you believe how easy this was?
Now you can keep bottles not just in your bathroom but also near the kitchen sink, so you no longer have to wash your hands with dish soap.
