Learn to Give – A Child’s Life in Barbados

While on my trip to Barbados I was able to pick up a few souvenirs before leaving the country at the airport. A few of those souvenirs just happened to be books. Being a fan of books I was really excited when mommy got not just one but two of them. One of the things you may have remembered me saying last week, if you read about my Caribbeand Adventure in Barbados, was that today I was going to highlight the books that mommy got for me. One of the books that I was got was “Learn to Give – A child’s Life in Barbados” written by Pauline Arbab-Zadeh. Unfortunately for you my readers, the only way to get this book is to actually be in Barbados and buy a copy. One of the reason mommy got this book for me, was because all profits from the sale of the book will be donated to the “Because of Jenna” foundation, and will help children who cannot walk, see or hear on that beautiful island. I’m grateful that I can do all three so it’s good to know that I’m helping out a good cause.

Now lets get into the book and see what it’s all about. I love making my reviews short and nice so I don’t bore you.

Lear to Give – A Child’s Life in Barbados is exactly what the name suggests. The story is told in the first person and you can imagine yourself saying it aloud if you live on the island. It tells the story about what it’s like living in Barbados and why people visit which is described “because it’s always summer”. It sure did feel like summer when I was there in December.

It tells about the different activities that they do such as going to the beach and having a picnic, swimming in the water and running around in the sand, dancing at the crop over festival which is their carnival and even about the different animals and fruits that can be found on the island.

Here’s an excerpt from the book:

Barbados grows sugar cane and we dance at the crop over festival.

On Sunday my mum packs a picnic and we go to the beach with lots of family and friends.

While reading the book you can tell the difference between living on the island and living here in the US where most live in apartments. Even the houses are different and the way we wake up. While I get woken up by my mom or dad or maybe even the traffic passing by, they get woken up by blackbirds singing. Now if I can have that everyday I’d be in paradise.

Learn to Give – A Child’s Life in Barbados is beautifully illustrated and is available in board book format. If you are ever on the island of Barbados I suggest picking up a copy. It is available at most hotels and book shops and of course at the airport souvenir shop where I got mine for only $10US or $20BDS. It’s a great way to commemorate your trip and of course you give back as well.
