Do you enjoy drinking coconut water but had no idea there were health benefits to doing so?
Growing up on a tropical island in the Caribbean, I spent my days drinking coconut water directly from the nut and most often freshly picked from the tree, and I took it for granted. It wasn’t until I immigrated to the US and had to purchase it from the supermarket in a can or carton, did I realize how truly fortunate I was back then. So whenever we visit an island or anywhere tropical, and there is coconut to be found, I can never resist drinking a few the good old-fashioned way. After all, there’s nothing better than drinking it directly from the nut, with or without a straw.
Coconut water, as you may know, is the liquid that comes from the inside or cavity of the coconut, and is different from coconut milk. Coconut milk is harvested from the older brown coconut, has a thicker consistency, and is used in many Caribbean dishes such as soups and curries, while coconut water is what you get from the younger coconut (green or yellow). Here in the USA, you can find coconut water in cans or cartons at your organic health food stores, supermarkets, and grocery stores. They can be purchased with or without pulp, organic, and mixed with other juices as well.
So why is coconut water such a popular drink among so many, and what are the benefits of drinking coconut water? Here are just three!
It’s Low Calorie and Keto-Friendly
Coconut water is not only delicious but a low-calorie beverage as well, with an average of 50 calories per one-cup serving. This is considerably fewer calories than most juices, even those claiming to be 100% juice, making it an excellent alternative for those who are on the keto or low-carb diet. I personally keep a few in my refrigerator for when I prefer to have something a bit tastier than plain water.
An Electrolyte Hydration Booster
Unlike other electrolytes or sports drinks that you can find on supermarket shelves, coconut water is rich in antioxidants, and it contains essential electrolytes that are already present in the body, such as magnesium and potassium. Still, it’s also a natural source of vitamins C, B6, and folate. This makes coconut water the perfect electrolyte replacement instead of sports drinks, which generally contain lots of processed sugar.
Great for Indigestion
If you’re prone to digestion issues such as heartburn and indigestion, coconut water can help you tremendously. Because of its high fiber content, coconut water can aid in the prevention of indigestion and can also help with the reduction of heartburn. Sipping on chilled coconut water can help you when you’re not feeling your best.
I know I always feel better after drinking my coconut water!
Now, if you’re one of those persons who find drinking straight coconut water isn’t for you because of the taste, there are a few ways you can receive the benefit. You can add it to your smoothies for that hint of coconut or even to your juices. So the next time you’re looking for a drink to quench your thirst, consider coconut water as your water of choice.
