Whether it’s your first baby or your second, we’ve got tips on how to go about organizing your baby’s nursery.
I remember when I was having my daughter, I couldn’t wait to decorate my nursery. The number of onesies, socks, and dresses that I bought for her, along with the clothing that I received as gifts, was overwhelming. I had to think of a way to organize all the tiny clothing I received and purchased in different sizes, to not only keep her nursery tidy but to make my life easier as well.
Besides the clothing, I knew that this was a place where I would be spending a lot of time feeding, diaper changing, and playing with my baby. I needed her nursery to be organized in a way that I could find everything whenever I needed it. I hate clutter and there’s nothing worse than a disorganized nursery, and I have to admit that having everything in its place sure did make things easier.
So, what did I do? Here are some tips I found incredibly helpful for keeping everything in it’s place.
1. Sort by Size, Season and Occasion
The first thing I did was start sorting my baby girl clothes by size, season, and occasion. You can use dividers and sort by newborn, 0–3 months, 3-6 months, and so on. Your baby girl is going to start wearing her newborn clothing from the moment they’re released from the hospital so that should be the most easily accessible. Separate the special occasion clothing from your everyday wear, and depending on the season, those items as well. For example, your baby’s winter coats are separated from lighter jackets.
2. Label Everything
Label everything! This is one of the easiest ways to keep everything neat and tidy. I suggest using bins to store clothing that you won’t need right away, labeling those as well and storing them away. Label bins, drawers, hangers, and organizers to keep everything neat and tidy. This not only helps you stay organized but also makes it easier for anyone who will be taking care of your baby girl to find what they need.
3. Embrace Clear Storage
I mentioned this above and I have to say it again. Clear storage bins are great for seeing what’s inside at a glance. They are great for storing seasonal clothes or those next-size-up clothes that you purchased while on sale or received as gifts at your baby shower. Stack them on your closet shelves for easy access.
4. Use Drawer Dividers
Drawer dividers are the best. I still use them as an adult because they are so useful, but when it comes to tiny clothes, they are the absolute best. Drawer dividers help you organize items like socks, hats, and baby mittens so that they can be easily found. You no longer need to sort through all the tiny items that might be easily displaced because you can’t find them. It will also keep your drawers looking neat and organized.
5. Display Daily & Favorite Outfits
Have place where you can easily grab your daily outfits. One way to go about doing this is to install some hooks on the wall, or you can also create a space in your closet dedicated to daily outfits and favorites. If you have the space, you may also consider using a rack. Having a special space for these outfits will help cut down on the time you spend looking for particular outfits. It can help when you’re trying to rush to that mommy-and-me class that you booked.
6. Keep a Donation Bin Handy
One thing that I learned as a mother is that babies grow exceptionally fast and clothes become small much faster than you expect. Having a donation bin handy in the closet for items that no longer fit will be a game changer. Once your donation bin is full, you can then donate the clothing to your local charity or simply pass them on to friends and family who are having babies of their own.
7. Designate a Feeding Zone
Whether you decide to breast or bottle-feed your baby, having a cozy corner for feedings will make your time with your baby even more special. Consider purchasing a comfortable rocking chair, a side table for water and snacks, and a soft light for late-night feeding sessions, and personalize your space with a plant or artwork to make it a special retreat for both you and your baby. Keep your feeding supplies neatly organized and easily accessible.
Consider installing wall-mounted shelves or a storage unit near the chair to hold bottles, formula, breast pump accessories, and bibs. Use baskets or bins to corral smaller items such as pacifiers, nursing pads, and nipple cream, ensuring everything is within arm’s reach when needed.
8. Create a Diaper Changing Station
Having a specific space for changing your baby’s diapers can also make things easier for you. While you can opt for a dedicated changing table, you can also use a changing pad on a dresser. However, be sure to always keep your eyes and hands on your baby. Always keep diapers, wipes, and other necessary items that you may need near by and on hand. Using a basket or caddy to organize your supplies can make changing your baby’s diaper even more quick and convenient.
9. Don’t Forget Laundry Organization
There are no if’s, and’s or buts about this; you’re going to be dealing with a lot of laundry. Even more so if you decide on using cloth diapers. Set up a laundry hamper in your baby’s nursery to collect dirty clothes. Consider using a hamper with multiple compartments for easy sorting to separate whites, colors, and delicate items.
