It has been months since the COVID-19 broke out. And it has been months since the World Health Organization advised us to stay home and self-isolate.
Hence, it is not surprising to know that a lot of us are now bored out of our wits. What more our children?
Mind you, keeping the kids entertained while staying safe at home can be daunting. That said, we have listed down eight fun activities that you and your children can enjoy during this pandemic:
1. LEARN DANCING
In case you are seeing a lot of parents doing Tik Tok dance challenges these days, it is probably because they are bored.
This is not just a way to keep the entire family entertained, but it is also a great way to bond.
Kids and teens tend to have an infinite source of energy. Hence, it would be ideal to let them learn how to dance ‒ be it through Tik Tok or by just watching a YouTube video.
Aside from bonding and entertainment, dancing offers a handful of benefits:
- Boosts your kids’ self-esteem
- Encourages to be active
- Provides an opportunity to self-express
- Teaches self-mastery
2. COOKING AND BAKING
One of the best ways to keep your children entertained is to cook and bake with them. Mind you; the kitchen can be a fascinating place for them.
For one, it allows them to use as many of their senses, such as the sense of smell, taste, and sight. Not to mention that they find it intriguing how steam rises from pots or how a dollop of cookie dough becomes a real cookie.
Depending on your kids’ age, you can ask them to help you with baking or cooking. It can be as simple as asking them to pass the chocolate chips or teach them how to properly crack eggs.
3. BUILD DENS AND FORTS
We have made dens and forts using tables, chairs, sheets, and some cushions when we were kids. And we cannot deny the fact that it allowed us to let our imaginations run wild.
Why not let our kids experience the same, especially now that there is a lot of anxiety-inducing news happening around the world?
Give your kids the chance to make their own blanket fort, and let them pretend that they are camping or staying warm while they are in Antarctica.
If you can afford and you have space, you might as well purchase some camping gear. That way, you can do indoor camping with your kids.
4. STAY FIT TOGETHER
Other than dancing, you might also want to make your kids your gym buddy. After all, health professionals advise us to exercise while on lockdown.
Aside from ensuring that you remain healthy during this time, exercise is another way for your children to make use of their energy.
It can be as simple as letting your kids ride your back while doing a pushup or let them learn with you. If you do yoga, for instance, you can teach your kids the simplest form first. And once your child masters it, then you can up the ante.
5. FLY A DRONE
Another activity that you can do with your kids without necessarily going outside would be flying a rogue drone. All you need to do is make sure that the conditions to fly a drone is right.
For one, there are legalities involved with flying a drone. More so now that some countries are preventing their citizens from going out of their house unless it is essential.
So if you are lucky that you can fly a drone, make sure to research what is legal in your area. There are built-up cities and densely populated areas that do not allow flying drones.
6. ARTS AND CRAFTS
If flying a drone seems impossible from where you live, then you might want to get crafty with your kids.
You can learn various paper folding techniques and then make an origami. You can also do some scrapbooking or encourage your kids to write a journal. That way, you and your kids can take your mind off the COVID-19 pandemic.
This can also be a great way to write down your worries about our current situation. And while you are it, you can discuss something about your kids, such as what they have learned so far regarding the issue.
7. VIRTUAL TOURS
Sure, we are advised to self-isolate, but that does not mean that we cannot see the great outdoors.
Thanks to Google Earth from Chrome, you and your kids can visit and explore local and international places in seconds. You can explore different cities in 3D format online, which allows you and your kids to discover something new even while self-isolating.
Other than that, there are various places all over the world that offer virtual tours like the Louvre museum, the Great Wall of China, or the tomb of Pharaoh Ramesses VI.
8. DRAW AND PAINT
If you have a flair for art, another indoor activity that you can do with your kids is to draw and paint. Art is one way for your kids to express how they feel, more so in times like these.
As a parent, it is understandable to worry about what can happen in the future, especially now that this pandemic can cause anxiety. But you are not the only one who is scared.
It is important that your kids can also express those feelings. Not to mention that this is an excellent activity for you and your kids to bond while staying indoors. Luckily, you only need some papers and crayons to encourage your kids to draw.
There is no denying that a lot of people are spending more time at home than usual. And the current situation can disrupt your family’s daily routine. The eight activities we have listed above will not just keep you and your kids entertained. It can also take your family’s mind away from the uncertainty and anxiety brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, you can manage your stress and anxiety better.
