Schools are currently closed due to the coronavirus outbreak in a bid to stem the rapid infection rate of the virus. Kids are home for the next two weeks, at least, with talks of it being extended. Some states have already implemented curfews and sanctioned the number of people that gather in one area. However, having the kids at home doesn’t mean that it’s an extended vacation from school. Check out our totally free educational websites that will keep their brains stimulated while they wait for schools to reopen.

This change in routine can not only have an impact on kids but on adults as well as significant adjustments will now need to be made. Continuing with a routine will not only make your days less stressful but will keep them on track if schools reopen sooner than they expected. And my Coronavirus (COVID-19) schedule can help you do that. This schedule is not set in stone and can be adjusted to fit your lifestyle. You can do a later wake-up, later dinner, mix things around. After all, you’re the only one who knows what your day will be like.

7:00am – 8:00am: Wake Up!

My kids are used to waking up at 6am as they’re usually out the door before 7:30am, so I want them to stick to that schedule so that when it’s time to go back to school, I won’t have to create a back-to-school routine all over again. This is the time to shower, brush their teeth, have breakfast, etc., generally the same things that they did every weekday before they got out. However, you’ll want to incorporate some ground rules to enable a stress-free day.

8:00am – 9:00am: Stretch Them Legs!

Take the dog for a walk, or you can even introduce yoga to your kids. Stretch your legs and body because it’s going to be a long day. For kids who have been homeschooled, it can feel as though the home is a place to relax, but school is about to be in session.

9:00am – 12:00pm: Get Your Education!

For those whose kids attend traditional schools, as mine do, I have provided a list of educational websites that are 100% free for grade levels, from elementary all the way through high school. While you can be a bit more relaxed with your preschoolers and kindergarteners, those that are at mandated testing grades need a bit more structure.

12:00pm – 1:00pm: Let’s Eat!

Lunch doesn’t have to be a big deal. Kids are generally happy with sandwiches, pre-packaged kids’ meals, milk, and juices. However, ensure to incorporate some healthy snacks such as fruit to ensure that they’re nutritional needs are still being met.

1:00pm – 1:30pm: Knock Them Chores Out!

Each child should have an assigned age-appropriate chore that takes less than a ½hr to complete. Whether that’s loading or unloading the dishwasher, doing laundry basics, or even taking out the trash. Now is the time to get it done.

1:30pm – 3:00pm: More Education!

Each child has a set classroom schedule, so I recommend sticking as close to that as possible; however you don’t need to work on every subject matter, but you can do at least 2 subjects daily. Remember, being at home doesn’t mean that learning has to stop, and it also isn’t a holiday, but you can make learning fun.

3:00pm – 5:00pm: Go Outside Please!

Daylight savings has officially begun, which means that not only are there more daylight hours, but the weather has started warming up as well. Get the kids outside. They can go in the backyard and explore or ride around the block on their bikes. Exercise does the body good! If they’d prefer to be indoors, there are many ways to keep them entertained.

5:00pm – 6:00pm: Dinner Time!

Older kids can help prepare dinner, while younger ones can help to set the table. Have them wash their hands after being outdoors for a minimum of 20 seconds with soap and warm water. This time is also a time to reflect on the day, communicate as a family, ask how the day went, and maybe change around the schedule if needed.

6:00pm – 9:00pm: Leave Mom Alone Time!

This is what they’ve been waiting for, and so have you. Moms and Dads need a bit of downtime because the day will begin all over again tomorrow. Take this time to decompress, drink a glass of wine, watch your favorite TV show while the kids play together before getting ready for bed.

8:30pm – 9:00pm: Bed!

Kids need at least 10 hours of sleep. Stick with a consistent bedtime, and there’ll be less stress in the morning, for not just you, but for them as well as you’ll all be well-rested. Younger kids can go to bed earlier while you can either give older kids an extra half-hour before bedtime.

While this schedule can be adjusted to fit every household, remember that you should also be spending quality time with your kids. Ensure that they are getting enough physical activity and fresh air, and their nutritional needs are being met. But most of all, have fun!
