The Ultimate Guide to Decorating Your Home for Christmas

It’s never too early to think about decorating for Christmas, right? At least we don’t think so. Forget about Christmas in July; this is Christmas in May.

Christmas Decor

Christmas may be months away, but lately, decorations have been arriving in stores earlier and earlier each year. Christmas is hands-down my favorite time of the year. I start playing my Christmas carols as soon as Thanksgiving is over and I put away my fall decor. For many of us, there’s no better way to usher in the joys of Christmas than by decorating our home with all the festive decorations we can find.

This guide will help you get ready for Christmas, whether you’ve done it before or this is your first time. We’re going to talk about some ways to decorate for Christmas to make your room or house look like a winter scene.

Plan Color Scheme and Theme

Let’s get started, and this is the first thing you’re going to want to do. The color scheme and theme that you decide on will help with your overall decorating plan. Would you like a more modern look with rose gold? Or would you like it to be the classic red and green, like always? Or maybe you want to use silver and blue for a winter theme or even pastels? You could also go for a more rustic look with wooden accents or go for something fun. There are many different themes for your home decor. If you’re at a loss, a quick Google search can also help you come up with ideas.

Decorations to Consider

You can pick from a lot of different decorations, such as garlands, wreaths, stockings, and ornaments. Choose things that go with your theme and look good together.

Wreaths and Garlands

I highly suggest starting with your front door. Putting a wreath on your door will make people feel welcome and mark the beginning of the holiday season. Your wreath can match your indoor theme, but I highly suggest opting for a traditional evergreen wreath complete with festive bow, pinecones and berries. You can purchase wreaths at your local hobby stores or even on sites such as Etsy.

On the inside, drape your garlands along your stairs, railings, mantels, fireplaces, and over doorways. Consider hanging a mini wreath above your fireplace if you do have one as well. To make your garlands even more magical, add twinkling lights, ribbons, and even ornaments to enhance them.

Ornaments

When you think of ornaments, many think of them only on the Christmas tree, but I have used ornaments throughout our home in more places than the tree. If you have Christmas ornaments sets, there are many places that you can use these ornaments in your home for the Christmas holidays. Here are a few places you can incorporate ornaments into your holiday décor:

  • Garland Decorations: Hang ornaments from your garland and hang them over mantels, stairs, or doors.
  • Table Centerpieces: To make beautiful table centerpieces, put ornaments in bowls, vases, or hurricane light holders.
  • Window Decor: Use ribbons or fishing line to hang ornaments in the windows.
  • Embellish Wreaths: To add depth and volume, use floral wire or hot glue to attach ornaments to wreaths. Arrange them in a way that makes sense among the leaves and bows to make a unique and eye-catching wreath.
  • Gift Wrapping Accents: Use ornaments to add style to gifts that have been wrapped. You can add them to the top of gifts with ribbon or twine.
  • Chandelier Decor: Use fishing line or decorative ribbon to hang ornaments from the arms of chandeliers or pendant lights.

Stockings

You can also use stockings in your Christmas decorations to enhance your home, and they don’t have to be solely dedicated to the fireplace. Here are a few creative ways to use your stockings:

  • Staircase Garland: Hang stockings from the banister of your stairs to make a garland for the holidays. For extra charm, tie them together with flowers, ribbons, and lights that twinkle.
  • Chair Back Accents: Decorating the backs of dining chairs with stockings is a cute way to add holiday cheer to your table. You can hang them from the chairs using ribbons or removable hooks. You can also fill the stockings with small gifts or treats.
  • Decorate Windows: Hang your stockings from curtain rods or decorative hooks to make your windows look festive.

Trim the Tree

It won’t be Christmas without a Christmas tree as the centerpiece of your holiday decoration. It doesn’t matter whether you have a fresh tree or an artificial tree; it’s all about making your tree shine. Once you’ve decided on the theme you’re going for, grab some Christmas ornaments, lights, and tree toppers to complete and complement your tree and theme. When it comes to decorating your tree, have a variety of sizes of ornaments and space them out evenly throughout your tree, both front and back so your tree doesn’t become top heavy and fall to the front. Finish off with a stunning tree topper, whether it’s a classic star, an elegant angel, or a whimsical bow.

Consider Soft Furnishings

As the weather gets cooler, it’s time to make your home feel cozy by adding throws, pillows, and rugs in colors and patterns that are seasonal. Add layers of fake fur, cable knit, and velvet to bedrooms and living rooms to make them warmer and more interesting. For a cozy touch, drape a holiday throw over the back of a sofa, pile fluffy pillows on sofas, and put a soft rug under the Christmas tree. These soft items not only make you feel better, but they also add to the look of your holiday decor as a whole.

Add Personal Touches with DIY Decor

Now is the time to add your own style and creativity to your holiday decorations by making them yourself. Get some materials, like salt dough, felt, or clay, to make unique ornaments. You can also get cheap supplies at a dollar shop near you. You can make wreaths, centerpieces, and table settings out of natural materials like twigs, berries, and pine cones.

Adding family pictures, heirlooms, and other treasured items to your displays will bring back memories and give your decorations more meaning. Not only will you get to spend some time together as a family, but you will be incorporating holiday decorations that have a special meaning to you into your decor.

Wrapping and Displaying Gifts

Gifts wrapped in paper and ribbons that match your theme can serve as decorations too. Arrange them creatively under the tree or in other areas of your home for added festive charm, instead of hiding them away until Christmas morning. You can place them on side tables, on a decorative tray or shelf, or even nestled among the greenery and garlands.

Christmas Music and Entertainment

Don’t forget the music. Christmas isn’t Christmas without Christmas music. Create a playlist of classic Christmas carols and modern holiday hits to play in the background while you decorate and during your holiday gatherings.

In Conclusion

Whether you decide on a classic Christmas or a decor with a more modern vibe, we hope our guide will help you make your home the talk of the neighborhood, or among your friends and family this holiday season.
