Waterbeds are a lot of fun, and sleeping on them is even more so. But, when it comes to draining one, it can be quite stressful. But, before we proceed, for those of you who don’t know, a waterbed is a type of bed whose mattress is filled with water. So, if you think you will easily carry it like a regular mattress, well, that’s not going to happen. Waterbeds need to be adequately drained before you can transport them or store them. Now, mostly waterbeds come equipped with a pump to make sure you seamlessly drain the bed. However, what if you lose the pump or simply don’t have one? How will you drain your waterbed? Well, keep reading to know more.
Step 1: STRIP THE BED
Even if it’s a waterbed, you probably have bedding and blankets on the mattress. So, first, make sure you strip the bed. Remove everything from the mattress.
Step 2: PLACE TOWELS BELOW THE BED
The waterbed is made of water. Generally, they are a double bed, and double bed dimensions are 4’6 x 6’2. Now, we don’t want water spills dirtying the place. Therefore, place the towels around the bed so that the towels absorb it even if there are any spills.
Step 3: UNPLUG THE WATERBED
You need to go behind the bed and then unplug your waterbed heater. If there are any other sources of power, unplug them too. If you don’t unplug before emptying the bed, it can be dangerous, and you can even damage the bed.
Step 4: FIND THE VALVE
The fill and drain valve is an opening in the waterbeds that allow you to fill and drain the water. Generally, it is located at the foot of the bed, but you never know. Once you find it and remove the cap.
Step 5: EMPTY THE AIR
Once you remove the cap, you need to empty the air from the mattress. Push as much air as you can. You can use a broomstick and mildly sweep on top of the bed to push out the air. You need to get as much air as possible out as it can slow down the draining process.
Step 6: PUT THE CAP BACK ON
Once you get rid of as much air as possible, put the cap back on to ensure you stop the air from entering the bed again. Keep the lid tight so that water doesn’t leak as well.
Step 7: WHERE TO EMPTY THE BED
You need a long hose, which you connect to the waterbed and let it out. Now, if you have a garden outside, you can make sure that the hose goes out of the window. The hose’s draining end should be lower than your bed; otherwise, it won’t drain properly. You can also choose to empty the bed in a tub or sink. However, if it is a sink or a tub, make sure its drainage is proper. Now, connect the hose to a faucet, and the other end of it should be connected to the drain valve. Then, turn on the water for 10-15 seconds as it pushes all the air out. Disconnect the hose and drop it to the ground. Gravity will aid the drainage.
