Looking for some fun alternatives to candy for Halloween? I’ve got you covered!
The countdown has begun! Halloween is right on our doorsteps, and I couldn’t be more excited. We get to make memories with the ones we love. Go trick or treating around the neighborhood, but be sure to follow our trick or treating safety tips, and indulge in a little more sweets than usual.
This time of the year is filled with excitement and anticipation, and you want your children to enjoy themselves. But you also want to make sure they don’t get sick from eating too much sugar! That’s why having a Halloween candy alternative is a great idea.
Traditionally, Halloween is also all about the candy, and there are quite a few ways to get rid of all the leftover candy you may have collected this year. There’s no way to escape this. But if you don’t want your kids gorging on sugar like every year, I have some healthy snack ideas that won’t spoil the fun of trick-or-treating.
Of course, I’m not suggesting you shouldn’t let the kids enjoy their Halloween stash! The trick is to create an environment where they can enjoy some yummy snacks that will satisfy their sweet tooth and offer a bit more nutrition. Check out these fun Halloween candy alternatives that your kids will love.
1. Frozen Banana Ghosts
With Halloween, just a hop, skip, and a jump away, it’s always nice to have a few healthy recipes you can whip up in just a few minutes. All you need are frozen banana slices and a few chocolate chips or M&M’s to press onto the bananas.
All you need to do is peel the bananas and cut them in half. That way, the banana halves will stand on their own. Grab two mini chocolate chips or M&M’s and place them where the eyes should be. Press a tiny chocolate chip to shape your ghost’s mouth and freeze them. Chef’s kiss!
Want your banana ghosts to be a bit more decadent? Bathe them in a layer of white chocolate as shown in this fun tutorial.
2. Cheese and Pretzel Witches’ Brooms
This tasty snack ticks every box when it comes to healthy Halloween treats: they’re super simple to make, budget-friendly, and they’re ridiculously cute.
All you’ll need are 10 slices of cheese, 10 slices of fresh chives, and 10 pretzel sticks. You can double up the ingredients if you need more witches’ brooms.
Start by folding up each slice of cheese and cutting the fringes at the bottom so that they resemble tiny brooms. Grab a string of chives to tie them around the pretzel sticks and voila! How simple was that? Here’s a video that shows the step-by-step process in case you’re more of a visual person.
3. Apple Monster Teeth
This creamy treat packs a mighty flavor punch without being too overpowering. Best of all? It’s quick and easy to make and uses ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. You can use your favorite nut butter to make these Apple Monster Teeth. Keep this recipe handy when you’re craving something sweet on a rainy day. Here’s the full recipe and a list of steps.
4. Jack O’ Lantern Ice Cream Bowls
It doesn’t get much easier – or cuter – than this fancy treat that looks like it was handcrafted by Martha Stewart herself.
This vegan and dairy-free Halloween dessert is a great way to let the kids indulge in a little ice cream, without having to bust out the ice cream machine.
For this treat, you’ll need a few mini pumpkins (also known as “Baby Boo pumpkins”), two cups of frozen strawberries, half a cup of cashew nuts, and 3 to 4 dates to add a little bit of sweetness and texture. You can replace the strawberries with other frozen fruits of your liking.
Set aside the pumpkins for now.
To make this ice cream, you’ll only need 3 minutes. Just place all the ingredients together in a blender and blend away until you get a creamy ice cream texture. That’s it. Isn’t it wild how simple that is? This treat is ready to serve, so make sure you prep it minutes before the kids are ready to eat.
Now comes the fun part – making your Jack O’Lantern bowls! Grab the miniature pumpkins, cut them in half, and scoop out all the seeds. These will become your serving bowls that will be filled with the ice cream. Instead of poking holes to create the eyes, cut a few corners by using black mini M&M’s. If you’re pressed for time, you can replace the hollowed-out pumpkin bowls with orange plastic bowls. With a Sharpie pen, draw eyes and a mouth on your Jack O’ Lanterns and you’re all set!
