There’s nothing more that I love than a wonderful-smelling home, and my Essential Oil Lamp will keep your home smelling great for less, and you can recreate it in very little time.

Don’t get me wrong, I still purchase the commercially made plug-ins for my bathrooms, but lately, with my living healthier kick, I have been thinking of ways I can eliminate all the chemicals in my home and do things a bit more naturally. I have yet to manufacture my own toothpaste, laundry detergent, or cleaning supplies, but trust me, it’s coming.

So what made me decide to make these essential oil lamps? I suffer from migraines, and lately, I have been having headaches on an almost daily basis. My doctors can’t figure out the reason, and I am truly sick and tired of taking medications daily. A friend of mine recommended using essential oils and cutting out some of the commercial products I use in my house. My first thought was of my air freshener.

They are on daily rotation in my household and can be found in almost every room in my home, but I have no idea what’s in them or if they’re even OK for me to inhale. If it’s not acceptable for me, then that means it’s not for my kids or my pets either. So I decided to make a change. One small step for me, a giant leap for my family. I made the decision to create my own essential oil lamps, and they smell amazing!!! They are also simple to prepare, and you may even have most of the ingredients in your kitchen currently.

Essential oils of choice

Light olive oil

Floating wicks

Food coloring

Water

Mason jar

Decorations (flowers—real or fake ones work just as well; decorative stones, lemons, etc.)

Step 1.

Fill your mason jars with your decor of choice. I decided to make 2 different versions. First, I added lemons, some fake flowers, and decorative stones that I decided would be used in my kitchen. For my second, I purchased some flowers at Walmart and cut the floral stem to use in my jar. Once you’ve placed your decor in your jar, cover it with water.

Step 2.

Add 2-3 drops of the food coloring of your choice to give your lamp a bit of color. I used yellow for my lemon lamp and a nice purple for my floral lamp, but you can use your color of preference.

Step 3.

Add a few drops of your essential oil of choice; this will give your lamp a beautiful fragrance once lit. Since I was using the lemon oil lamp in my kitchen, I used an orange essential oil, and for my flowers, I used a lavender essential oil because I wanted to use it in my bedroom to help me relax.

Step 4.

Pour your olive oil on top of your water and decor, until it forms a thick layer. Or you can use about 2 tablespoons of oil, which will burn for about 3–4 hours.

Step 5.

Your floating wicks come unassembled, so you’re going to need to put them together. It’s very straightforward. Simply insert a piece of the waxed wick through the center of the hole on the disc. Place it on top of the oil in your lamp, and you’re ready to light your lamp and inhale a fragrance so aromatic that you won’t need any other air freshener.

I can’t wait to produce more with different floral arrangements, spices, and even pinecones and peppermint for the winter holidays. These essential oil lamps are not only beautiful to look at, but they’re also a lot safer than candles. When you have children, you have to be very careful with lit candles. However, in the event that your child knocks this over, the water in the jar will immediately smother the flame. When you’re ready to extinguish your flame, simply blow on it or cover it with the lid of your mason jar.

These stunning essential oil lamps will not only keep your home smelling incredible but also make for great decor as well.
