If you’re looking to get away while the kids are out of school this spring, the possibilities really are endless, but some options are definitely better than others. For starters, unless there is simply no other time or way to make a trip to a theme park happen, I’d definitely avoid them during spring break. (Think about it: Every family in the country has the same idea, so the lines will be longer and everyone’s patience will be shorter! Consider going somewhere less crowded.) Whether you’re ready for some beach time, or your idea of spring time fun is ski lessons for the whole family, I’ve got plenty of ideas for you. Here are the best spring break destinations with kids in my book:
1. Southwest Florida
Whether you’re looking for luxury or would prefer to rough it in the great outdoors, you’re sure to find all the relaxation you need along Florida’s Southwestern Gulf coast. Enjoy white sand beaches, tropical drinks and amazing seafood, world-class shopping, and historical and environmental tours through the Everglades all without the touristy-spring-break feel of other beach destinations this time of year. This hidden area of Florida is known for being a retiree’s paradise, mostly due to its laid-back and quiet vibe. There are countless beaches just waiting you! But you’ll find plenty of other things to do as well, from nightlife in the Fort Myers River District, to the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples, to the must-see Bubble Room restaurant on Captiva Island. Feeling adventurous? Take an airboat ride and say hello to a few less-than-friendly alligators while you’re at it! Fly into RSW airport and rent a car so you can explore all the area has to offer.
2. Park City Mountain Utah
Get outside and enjoy the snow one last time before it’s gone for the year! The whole family can get in on the fun at Park City, thanks to ski and snowboarding lessons for all ages and abilities. There’s no shortage of snowy, outdoor activities to try out, like taking a ride on the toboggan-style, Alpine coaster; soaring through the sky on the Flying Eagle zip line; going snowshoeing; snowmobiling; or taking a very unspring-like scenic sleigh ride. There’s also plenty of shopping and indoor spots to explore to escape the elements. The RockResorts Spa is world class and offers every state-of-art ritual imaginable to completely relax guests, especially after a long day on the slopes. When it’s time for dinner, you’ll have your pick of family-friendly, award-winning, fine dining establishments. Get a sitter and head out to experience the world-renowned nightlife on Main Street, which has everything from cowboy bars, to upscale wine bars, to nightclubs.
3. Grand Canyon National Park
With historic hotels, upscale resorts, and plenty of campgrounds available nearby, there’s a version of this iconic vacation for every family. A visit to the Grand Canyon can be both educational and fun, but it’s guaranteed to be breathtaking! The South Rim is open year round and has plenty of dining and activities to keep everyone entertained. Grand Canyon Village is where you’ll find the visitor center, theater, marketplace, train depot, art studio, and geological museum. In March, high temps reach the low 70’s, but in April they jump to the 80’s, so pack accordingly.
4. Horseback Riding in Central America
Adventure-seeking families with older kids can take the vacation of a lifetime with the seven-night Turf and Surf Getaway in Belize! Imagine staying at a resort where horses roam free among monkeys, iguanas, tropical birds, and even a resident jaguar! Explore miles of trails under a forest canopy on horseback, lounge riverside, or explore nearby Mayan ruins. Your spring break vacation photos are sure to be different than everyone else’s!
Make it a spring break your kids will never forget!
