Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is a vacation destination with something for everyone. Whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in history, indulge in world-class cuisine, explore museums and modern art, or embrace your inner child, you can do it all – and more – in Copenhagen. And although a trip to Copenhagen may carry a higher price tag than some more affordable European destinations, it’s absolutely worth the splurge if you can swing it!
Madison and I spent an amazing week in Copenhagen and we’re thinking a return trip in the summer needs to be on the agenda. Not quite convinced you should add Copenhagen to your list of places to visit? Here are just a few of my top reasons to consider a trip to Copenhagen:
THE FOOD
Many people are surprised to learn that this little Scandanavian city is perhaps one of the top destinations for food-lovers around the world. A number of restaurants throughout the city boast Michelin stars, if fine dining is your thing, but if you’d prefer to chow down on less extravagant meals, you can do that, too. You’ll find cozy cafes, upscale restaurants, bustling food halls, bakeries overflowing with fresh Danish pastries, and more ways to fill your belly than you can hope to enjoy while you’re there – so choose wisely!
THE EASE OF GETTING AROUND
To put it simply, Copenhagen is a fun place to explore in part because there are so many ways to see it! You can walk around town, sure – or you can explore by cruise boat or kayak on the town’s many canals. Or, you can embrace the local favorite way of getting around and rent a bike to navigate the streets of Copenhagen. Boat and bike tours offer visitors a way to experience the city, see the sights, and meet fellow travelers – always a good thing when you’re in a new spot!
THE PEOPLE
Danes have a reputation for being some of the kindest, most light-hearted folks in the world, and you’ll know why as soon as you have your first interaction with a local. They’re friendly, pleasant, and eager to help – which is a welcome change from locals in most overcrowded tourist spots like Paris. Don’t be afraid to ask a local for directions or restaurant recommendations, or to strike up a friendly conversation. Chances are, you’ll be well-received!
THE HISTORY
Home to the world’s oldest monarchy, it’s no surprise to find Copenhagen is a place perfect for history-lovers to explore. From museums showcasing ancient art and artifacts, palaces, and castles that highlight facets of the city’s past to public squares and spaces that played a role in significant historical events, you’ll find glimpses into the past wherever you go.
THE BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURE
Like many European capitals, Copenhagen is home to tons of gorgeous buildings. From the beautifully painted buildings that line the harbor at Nyhavn to the regal palaces and towers tucked throughout the city, there are plenty of opportunities to stop and appreciate – and snap a photo of – the city’s impressive structures.
These are just a few of the reasons you’ll want to add Copenhagen to your list of spots to visit in Europe. Whether you incorporate it into your next European itinerary or plan to check out Copenhagen as a standalone trip, you won’t be disappointed!
