Berlin is the capital of Germany, one of the most powerful nations in the world, and if you haven’t had a chance to check it out, you should definitely add it to your list of spots to visit! Berlin is a beautiful city, filled with friendly locals, great food, and more to see and do than a visitor could hope to experience in a single stay. Affordable and easy to navigate, you’ll wonder why you hadn’t been before when you finally check it out!
Not quite convinced why you should see Berlin for yourself? Here are five reasons you should make it a priority to visit Berlin:
The History
Berlin has played a pivotal role in many historical moments, especially those surrounding WWII and the Cold War that followed. Because of this, the city is an excellent choice for folks who love to get lost in history. From fragments of the divisive Berlin Wall and the majestic Brandenburg Gate to the various palaces and churches that have preserved through centuries of war, there are lots to see and do if you’re interested in the past.
The Food
Now, you might be thinking the only foods you’ll find in Berlin include schnitzel, spaetzle, and pretzels. While you can indeed find those well-loved German staples, you’ll also find a world of internationally-inspired cuisine to fill your belly and ignite your taste buds. From delicious Turkish kebabs and desserts to cuisine inspired by far-reaching spots like Japan and Mexico, you’ll find virtually anything you want to eat here – and there’s a good chance it’s going to be delicious.
The Museums
If you’re the kind of traveler who loves to get lost in an excellent museum, Berlin is the city for you. Aside from Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that boasts five impressively outfitted museums, you can find others around the city that focus on everything from historic events to technological advancements. From spots that spotlight the way Prussian royalty used to live to exhibits that let you experience the latest in video game technology, you’ll find it all in Berlin.
The Prices
I was surprised to learn just how affordable Berlin is compared to some other European capitals. While it still isn’t an absolute steal, you can find food and accommodations for reasonable rates, and many of the best things to see and do in the city are absolutely free, making it easy to enjoy Berlin’s most notable attractions without breaking the bank. While you can – and should – splurge a little to experience the best the city has to offer, you don’t have to, which is a welcome relief compared to lots of other European cities.
The Green Spaces
Berlin has done a remarkable job of preserving the feeling of nature within the city, thanks to a number of parks and green spaces scattered throughout. From Tiergarten, an expansive green space that serves as the Berlin equivalent to New York City’s Central Park, to the small neighborhood parks you can find tucked between buildings and on street corners, it’s clear the city places a high level of importance on embracing the outdoors.
There are plenty of other reasons to spend time in Berlin – the kind locals, the excellent music scene, and the vibrant nightlife, just to name a few! These, however, are the most compelling reasons to add Berlin to your next European travel itinerary.
