There are days when we just really feel good when we wake up that we’re even so confident to take a just-woke-up selfie right away. But, there are also those days that we just don’t feel like ourselves even if we’ve just had a complete night’s sleep.
Unless you have a medical condition that’s affecting your sleep, then, feeling less refreshed even after 7 to 8 hours of sleep is normal because of sleep inertia. While it’s inevitable, the good news is that you can beat it easily. How? Here are some tips.
Get Enough Sleep
Many factors contribute to the feeling of tiredness even after getting a full night’s sleep and one of them is sleep deprivation. When a person is sleep-deprived, sleep inertia is felt longer. Thus, it is a must that you make sure you always get enough sleep.
To ensure that you’re able to sleep tight, one of the things you must do is to practice sleep hygiene, such as setting a sleep schedule and following a nightly routine. You should also use excellent bedding, comfortable mattress, and more here on this website. This way, you’re sure of every corner. This ensures that your bedroom is cozy enough for sleeping.
Once your body gets used to it, you’ll be able to sleep well and wake up feeling more refreshed the next day.
Meditate
Whether or not you feel tired waking up, meditation is also a must-try. Doing this is beneficial for your mind and body.
For the mind, meditation the moment you wake up helps you relax and feel more in control of your day ahead as it sets the tone for your day and will help you become more optimistic, focused, aware, and content. This is also helpful for people suffering from a general anxiety disorder.
As for the physical body, doing this may boost your body’s immune function, which is vital in keeping diseases at bay.
To do this, you can do whatever meditation works for you. But if you’re not sure where and how to start yet, you can try the belly breathing technique where you need to sit or lie on your back comfortably and inhale through your nose for about 2 seconds making your stomach or diaphragm expand. Then, exhale slowly but completely and breathe in again.
Drink Water
There are different reasons why we wake up feeling tired. Aside from sleep inertia and stress, it could also be due to dehydration.
When you sleep, you lose a lot of fluid, which dehydrates your body. Because of this, you may still feel a bit sleepy and sluggish even after you’ve completed 7 to 8 hours of sleep.
For that reason, the moment you wake up, make it a point that you rehydrate yourself by drinking a glass or two of water. This will also make you feel more alert and prepared for the day ahead of you. As for the temperature of the water, it is recommended to drink warm water to stimulate your intestine’s movement.
Roll Up Your Shades
Melatonin is released in response to darkness and light is the main cue for your internal clock that tells when it’s time to get up. So, if you still feel sleepy in spite of having a full night’s sleep, it might also be due to the light in your room.
If your room is dark even when the sun is up, your body might not be able to make sense of the time. So, as soon as you wake up, roll up your shades and let the light get inside your room. This will signal your body that it already needs to wake up.
Exercise
Exercise can make us feel great in the morning too. Aside from the fact that it helps with the production of happy hormones, which make us feel happier and energized, it can also make our body feel lighter.
You don’t need rigorous exercise, though. Even gentle yoga will already help your body and mind to start for the day. Of course, you’ll benefit from the long-term effects of it too as it helps strengthen your physical body.
Eat Breakfast
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it replenishes the body and boosts energy and alertness levels. Health experts recommend eating a high-protein breakfast in the morning for you to feel more energized.
It’s important to feel light and refreshed in the morning, so you have more energy and confidence to face what’s ahead of you. That said, make sure to do what you can to feel energized the moment you wake up.
