Whether you’re visiting Honolulu for spring break, a family getaway, or a solo adventure, one thing’s for sure – you’ll want to make the most out of your trip. While it’s still technically the United States, Oahu – and the rest of Hawaii – can feel like a foreign adventure, especially given the length of the flight, so you’ll want to come prepared to take advantage of everything the city has to offer.
While you could certainly spend your whole vacation bouncing between your hotel pool and the beach, there are lots of fun things to take advantage of in Honolulu that you won’t want to miss. Not sure what that looks like? Here are a handful of my favorite things to check out in Oahu:
Take a Cruise
If you really want to experience the water, book yourself on a cruise! From whale watching cruises to dinner cruises during sunset, you’ll find a variety of options geared toward nearly every different type of traveler. Regardless of which one you choose, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the island and some incredible photo ops.
Hike the Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail
For an easy hike that the whole family can enjoy, head to the Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail. The trail is wide and paved, making it a perfect choice for families with strollers, older guests, and folks with mobility issues. You’ll be treated to stunning views along the way and the opportunity to glimpse a whale or two off the coast during the winter months.
Admire Manoa Falls
Want to see a waterfall while you’re in Hawaii? Plan a visit to Manoa Falls. This stunning spectacle is accessible by a 45-minute uphill hike, so it may not be the best idea for anyone dealing with mobility issues, but if you can make the trek, you’ll be treated to views of a gorgeous 150-foot waterfall. The trail does become incredibly slippery when wet, so steer clear when rain is in the forecast.
Take Advantage of the Water
While many visitors are satisfied merely sunbathing on the shore, admiring the water, you can have tons of fun in the ocean. You can rent paddle boards, invest in an affordable set of snorkeling gear, or sign the whole family up for a surf lesson. From kayaks and canoes to scuba and skimboards, you won’t run out of recreational opportunities on the water.
Visit the Waikiki Aquarium
Want to learn all about the marine life that calls Hawaii home? The Waikiki Aquarium offers an exciting, immersive, and educational experience for those eager to learn more about the 3,500 species that live within its walls. You won’t want to miss the Hawaiian Monk Seal exhibit, where you can view a couple of adorable – and highly endangered – rescued seals.
Make your trip to Oahu truly unforgettable by adding these activities to your travel itinerary. From scenic hikes and cruises to all the water sports you could imagine, you won’t run out of fun things to do while you’re there!
