There’s no denying the fact that COVID-19 and social distancing has changed virtually every aspect of our lives. It’s changed the way we work. It’s changed the way our children go to school. It’s changed the way we run our errands, plan our days, and so much more.
Fortunately, we’ve managed to find ways to make it work. Teleworking, homeschooling, grocery delivery, and video calls have helped us keep something of a normal schedule – at least, that’s how it feels now. But one thing that won’t ever feel normal under social distancing? Celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and other significant milestones like weddings and graduations. These are moments typically marked by friends and family getting together – but under the current circumstances, we’ve got to get creative.
Trying to plan a big celebration for a loved one under quarantine but not sure how? Here are a few ways you can make those big milestones feel meaningful:
Hold a Virtual Party
Even if we can’t physically be with each other, we can still spend time together! That’s the beauty of technology. Thanks to Facetime, Zoom, and a number of other platforms that let you connect via video, you can celebrate face-to-face even when you’re far away.
While you’re at it, make it a theme party! Challenge everyone to dress for the occasion. Whether you choose to celebrate your spouse’s birthday or child’s graduation with a fancy video call, a virtual costume party, or some other theme, you – and everyone else – won’t soon forget how much fun you had.
Go “Out to Dinner” At Home
Do you typically celebrate every anniversary with a special meal at your favorite restaurant? Don’t miss an opportunity to indulge! Find a way to replicate that experience from the comfort and safety of your own home. Order takeout, or pick up supplies in advance and find a Youtube tutorial or virtual cooking class to show you how to recreate your most-loved dishes from scratch. Set the mood with some background music, a candle or two, and a tablecloth – or bring dinner outside to the patio table or a picnic blanket on the lawn.
And don’t forget dessert! Place an order for a sweet treat from your favorite shop, or challenge yourselves to make the perfect creme brulee or cheesecake from scratch.
Find Ways to Recreate Your Favorite Ways to Celebrate at Home
While the idea of celebrating at home may not be much fun, you can have a blast – and enjoy some of your favorite celebratory activities – from the comfort of your living room.
Were you planning a trip to the movies for your kid’s next birthday? Create an epic movie night at home, complete with gourmet popcorn, a pillow fort, and the latest release. Is bowling your go-to family activity when it’s time to party? Create a DIY bowling alley down a hallway – or play Wii bowling! You can’t go to the roller rink, but you can strap on some skates and go around the block a few times!
As you can see, you can still make birthdays and milestones feel meaningful, even when you’re forced to stay at home and can’t hold a proper party. As long as you’re willing to get creative and put in a little work, you might find your next big celebration is your most memorable ever – even under quarantine.
